What is Geo-Fencing?
A Geo-fence is a virtual boundary on a geographic area. When that boundary is entered or exited it can be recognized as an event and the user can be notified of that event. The notification will tell the user which vehicle has entered/left the area and where it is at that point and time. This event information can be sent to a mobile telephone as well as to an email account, allowing management by exception.
How does it work?
Users simply enter the address of a location or landmark and radius parameters to create a rectangle geo-fence. When a vehicle enters or exits the area, SekurTrack™ informs the control center about this which records the date and time it crossed the geo-fence. A historical exception report can be run to easily identify vehicles that have crossed a geo-fence.
Why use Geo-Fencing?
Geo-Fencing provides greater control for fleet managers over the territory for their vehicles. Whether you have a specific route or areas that are “off limits” for safety purposes, Geo-Fencing is peace-of-mind that your vehicles are where they should be at all times.
There are 3 distinct types of Geo Fence:
Security Type Geo Fence
Timed Entry Geo Fence
Rolling Geo fence (two different methods)
Security Type Geo Fence
The prime function of the Security Geo Fence is to alarm when the Geo Fence is breached by exiting the fence. Typically it will be an area where the vehicle is parked. In most companies that will be their yard. In some businesses this will be their working area, which maybe as small as 10K by 8 K for example or a small town.
Timed Entry Geo Fence
An entry Geo Fence is the opposite of security Geo Fence. In essence it provides a warning you are nearing a location. In other words, breach of the Geo Fence provides warning of arrival. It could also function as a warning of pending arrival or failure to arrive at a target address. The normal use is for transport companies to warn the delivery location to prepare the docking bay to minimize delays in unloading. It could also be a warning for arrival to pick up a load.
Rolling Geo Fence
The final Geo Fence can be described as a rolling Geo Fence or the Geo Fence used to protect a vehicle for off route movement. The use of this type of Geo Fence concerns moving vehicles generally with high value loads thus there is a need to ensure the vehicle travels the road specified and gets to its destination. This type of Geo Fence operates on the principle of a series of Geo Fences on a route with each Geo Fence overlapping the previous one to ensure the alarm is not set off if the vehicle stays on route.
Second method is Intermediate Stage Rolling Geo-Fence. This type of usage is where there are a number of way points on a route where the vehicle can be expected at specific times.
